Blue Bird Pizza (formerly the T-Bird), a Worcester landmark on Park Ave., has been sold. No word about its future, but we hear that the owner will be updating or changing the concept. This place has been serving pizza to Worcester’s college students for decades. We will keep you posted.
Roma’s on Harding Street in Worcester finally opened its doors the last week of July. This BYOB Italian eatery features the cooking of Joe Petrou, formerly of Primo’s and Union Station The Restaurant. With Roma’s, Petrou goes back to the basics that made Primo’s so successful.
Jumpin Juice and Java opened its doors in mid-July at 335 Chandler Street in Worcester, the former home of Tatnuck Bookseller. Owned by Josh Van Dyke & Andrew Erickson, the place sells gourmet coffee, sandwiches, fruit smoothies and desserts. It is open seven days a week.
It looks like there will be a new restaurant going in next to the Hanover Theatre. Ed Madaus and Paul DeMoga, the brains behind the Hanover restoration, have purchased the Goral Optician building next door and are putting in a 150 seat restaurant. Starbucks on Shrewsbury Street, one of its three Worcester locations, is closing. This seems strange since it was a very busy store in a high-traffic area. The Starbucks, located down the road on East Central Street next to Pub 99, had only about half the traffic of its Shrewsbury Street counterpart.
The Parkway Diner on Worcester’s Shrewsbury Street has ended its short experiment with evening dining. The Parkway, which has been in the Evangelista Family for generations, used to be a regular on the all night eating circuit. The Cocke N Kettle, a Blackstone valley landmark for generations, has closed its doors. The restaurant had been in operation for almost 40 years before shutting down at the end of June. The struggling economy was a factor in the closing of the two-generation owned restaurant.
The Monument Grill has been recognized as a 2008 Editors' Choice in Yankee Magazine's Travel Guide to New England. The Tatnuck Square section of Worcester gets a new pizzeria this month as Muncheez Pizzeria opens at 1102 Pleasant Street. The restaurant is owned by Brahms Young and Colonel Boothe. There is another Muncheez on Route 9 in Shrewsbury. Dominos better watch out.
It looks like PJ’s New England Bar and Grille on Route 12 in West Boylston has been sold. The new owners are Anthony and Jennifer Picarello. The Town of West Boylston is slated to have a hearing on the license transfer July 2. Jennifer Picarello will be the manager. P.J. McQuaid had owned the place for several years.
The newest rumor making the rounds is that the Millbrook Restaurant on Worcester’s Gold Star Boulevard was sold to Gallo Motors whose dealership borders their property. Other rumors have Barbers Crossing purchasing the place. We will keep you posted.
Not Your Average Joe’s recently opened its doors on Route 9 in Westborough. This is the 19th location for the Massachusetts-based company. The restaurant, which opened at the site that once housed Applebee’s at 291 Turnpike Road in Westborough, will be managed by Worcester native Seth Caplan. Mike Covino of the Niche Hospitality Group owners of Block 5, Bocado & Mezcal in Worcester has signed on as a consultant to Worcester’s Beechwood Hotel. It will be opening a new restaurant in May 2009 and reliable sources tell us it will be a top of the line steakhouse.
Word on the street has it that Maxwell Silverman’s Toolhouse will be taking over space in Union Station that once housed Union Station the Restaurant. Don’t know yet if this will be an additional restaurant for Gus Giordano or if he plans to move the successful Maxwell’s from its Lincoln Square location.
24 Bar & Grille, a new restaurant and bar located on Parker Street in Gardner, recently opened its doors. 24 is open for business daily at 4 p.m.

The Canal Cocktail Lounge on Harding Street in Worcester’s Canal District opened for business the last week of May. The Canal, which has a nice living room feel to it, is next door to Castellana’s and features an outdoor Tiki bar.
The Blue Hydrangea bakery on Chandler Street in Worcester recently shut down its ovens.
Seamus O’Callahan’s in Sterling has changed its name to The Black Sheep Tavern and is now featuring a new expanded menu with daily lunch and dinner specials. Amici in Shrewsbury Center has a new chef. Drew Angilella took over the position at the Shrewsbury Trattoria in April. Angilella formerly worked at both Piccolo’s and Anthony’s on Worcester’s Shrewsbury Street. Watch for some exciting changes on the menu.
Not that Big Dipper! No, this is the Big Dipper Ice Cream Benefit for the Worcester Children’s Friends Society. The event, which is usually held on the Worcester Common, will be moving to Elm Park. The ice cream extravaganza will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on July 12.
Roma, the latest restaurant to open in Worcester’s Canal District and the brain child of Worcester Restaurateur Joe Petrou, late of The Restaurant at Union Station and Primo’s, began serving diners this week.
As reported here several months ago, The Emerald Isle Diner on Millbury Street in Worcester has new owners and a revised menu. Jim Iannotti and John Lloyd took over in the middle of April. They have added some kid- friendly options as well as an all-you-can-eat chicken dinner for $12.
The dining scene in Southbridge is expanding. Fins & Tales opened the first week of May. The restaurant is owned by Peter Deforge, a former owner of Rom’s in Sturbridge.
