It looks like the Bangkok House at 1394 Main Street in Worcester ~ the site of the former Bamboo Hut ~ is closed and for sale. The restaurant could not have been open for more than 3 months.
We hear that Joseph’s Bistro in Westminster has closed its doors. And while we’re talking about North County, we hear that The Border Griile in Leominster has also closed its doors, shortly after Worcester-based Niche Hospitality opened a Mezcal in downtown Leominster. Guess there’s not enough room for two Mexican restaurants in Northern Worcester County.
Overtime Tap is the third bar/restaurant that has occupied the space at the corner of Front and Commercial Streets in Worcester to close in the past few years. The first was Macfadden’s, which had about an 18 month run, the City Park Grille, which lasted 60 days, and now Overtime, which was open for about a year.
Volturno will be the name of the new upscale Italian pizza restaurant going into the space that once housed Edward Buick. The Taste of Marlboro will be held on Tuesday, June 11th from 5:30 to 9:30 pm in Downtown Marlboro. There are over 30 restaurants and 30 breweries participating. The annual Taste of the Nation fundraiser to benefit the Worcester County Food Bank and Rachel’s Table will take place on Monday, April 23 at The Manor in West Boylston. Lago opened the last week of March. This new Italian restaurant is located on the shores of Coes Pond in the space that formerly housed Joey’s.
Word has it that a couple of new restaurants will be opening soon in Worcester, both after renovations. 7 Nana, a new Sushi/Tapenaki restaurant on Shrewsbury Street, is slated to open at the end of April. Some say they’ve spent over a million dollars converting office space into a restaurant.

Worcester’s Shrewsbury Street is awash with rumors about the reopening of the space that once housed Junior’s. Word on the street has it that Robin Francese, the former manager, will be opening up the place, and has been toying with car-themed names.
The Ding Ho Dynasty restaurant ~ which very well may be the oldest Chinese restaurant in Worcester ~ recently closed its doors.. Chef John Lawrence of Pepper’s Fine Food and Catering in Northboro will soon kick off his 25th anniversary year as chef and owner. Lawrence owns the business along with his wife Susan. Congratulations to John and the entire staff ~ and especially Susan, too, who holds it all together so John can cook.
The Public House in Sturbridge recently won a People’s Choice Award for the best chowder in the Tri-Community Chowderfest. I guess anyone can do a New England Clam Chowder, but they won with a fried chicken chowder. Now that is different.
The Bull Run in Shirley has a new Executive Chef; it’s Isaac Carter, who has been manning the range since the beginning of the year. The Bangkok House recently opened at 1394 Main Street in Worcester. This was the home of The Bamboo Hut and, most recently, Pho 2000. If you haven’t figured it out by the name, they serve Thai food. Try it out.
Monument Grill, a fixture in downtown Leominster, recently closed. This is not the first time that this restaurant has faced trouble with the State Department of Revenue. No word yet on future plans for the location.
It’s been a circus with the Piccadilly Pub restaurant chain closing its doors. All nine Piccadilly Pub restaurants ~ including 5 in Central MA ~ appear to be closed as the Boston-based chain’s parent company goes through bankruptcy troubles. All of the restaurants are in MA, including sites in Worcester, Auburn, Sturbridge, Marlborough and Westborough.
Allgos Dessert Bar on Worcester’s Shrewsbury Street has reopened. The popular dessert spot has been closed for over six months as a result of a fire in the building. They plan on featuring more music and new desserts (including more fruit desserts). The music ~ alternating rock and acoustic ~ will be on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
Ritual, located in Downtown Worcester, has also launched a new menu. If you haven’t tried this place, you don’t know what you’re missing. It combines Meditereann flavors with a New York vibe. But don’t be afraid ~ it’s all at Worcester prices.
Last month we reported that Bill Nemroff was named the New Executive Chef at Ceres Bistro. Nemroff has instituted a new menu which was launched in the middle of February.
The Sakhat family, which owns the El Basha restaurants as well as Haiku, recently purchased the old D ‘Angelo Sandwich shop location on Belmont Street in Worcester. According to George Sakhat, they plan on opening an Italian restaurant on the site.
