Voodoo Tiki Tequila

Unleash Your Inner Zombie This Halloween

By Rick Garner

voodoo-tiki-tequila-logo-copyMuertos Vivientos (“The Living Dead”) is a tequila take on the classic 1934 Zombie recipe.

It’s earned the tag line “Don’t Bury Me. I’m Not Done Drinking Yet…”

This amazing and mind numbing elixir is the tequila equivalent of the famous Zombie Cocktail made of fruit juices, liqueurs, and various rums, so named for its perceived effects upon the drinker. The legendary cocktail was invented in 1934 by Ernest Raymond Beaumont-Gannt of Hollywood ~ famously known as Don the Beachcomber. It was popularized soon afterwards at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. Legend has it that Donn Beach originally concocted the Zombie to help a hung-over customer get through a business meeting. He returned several days later to complain that he had been turned into a zombie for his entire trip. Its smooth, fruity taste works to conceal its extremely high alcoholic content. Don the Beachcomber restaurants reportedly limited their customers to “Only Two Zombies Per Customer” ~ only adding to the dangerous allure and mystique.

Anything with such a sexy and mythic history such as the Zombie Cocktail is just begging for a tequila update. However, Donn Beach was very cautious with the recipes of his original cocktails. His instructions for his bartenders contained coded references to ingredients, the contents of which were only known to him.

Not so with Muertos Vivientos. The complete recipe, and Donn’s original recipe, are revealed below.

Voodoo Tiki Carnival Cotton Candy

We know that if you have discerning taste, chances are good you stay away from flavored and infused tequilas, but let us show you why you shouldn’t rush to judgment. The “Carnival Cotton Candy” will win you back and make a believer out of you.

We even tested it on añejo sippers. If anyone was going to condemn a Cotton Candy-inspired cocktail it would be these folks, but the response was actually quite positive.

The first thing you’ll notice is the aroma of cotton candy from the combination of 100% blue agave, all natural Blue Dragon Blue Raspberry and Kiwi Infused Tequila and real cotton candy. The presentation featuring two glasses ~ and the guest getting to pour the cocktail over Cotton Candy and ice ~ is a fun and visually appealing touch.

Now the cocktail is certainly sweet ~ Hello, it has “Cotton Candy” in the name ~ but this is not a cheap tequila masked with flavor. This is ultra premium Voodoo Tiki Infused Tequila 100% Blue Agave, all natural with no artificial colors.

The smell aids in capturing the cotton candy sensibility in your mouth; when the liquid hits your lips you will feel as if you are eating liquid Cotton Candy…and then wait for the images of the grand old carnival/freak days to kick in!

PS ~ Insanely dangerous rides and fixed carnival games optional.

VOODOO TIKI CARNIVAL COTTON CANDY

1.5 oz Voodoo Tiki Blue Dragon Blue Raspberry and Kiwi Infused Tequila
1 oz Vanilla Syrup
1.5 oz Club Soda
1/2 Cup by Volume Cotton Candy

Combine the liquid ingredients in a small cocktail shaker and stir ~ do not shake ~ gently so as not to lose the carbonation. Fill a bowl glass, such as a red wine glass with ice, leaving about a 1/2 inch at the top for the cotton candy, which should be place to be above the rim of the glass as pictured. Include a straw down the center to appear like a cotton candy stick. Serve allowing the recipient to pour the liquids over the cotton candy and ice.
